FanGraphs is now accepting applications to join our staff as a full-time associate editor.
The associate editor will work with the managing editor and the FanGraphs staff to publish daily baseball analysis and help shape the site’s editorial strategy. From free agent signings to statistical analysis, baseball’s top prospects to in-game strategy, we endeavor to present a holistic view of today’s game to our readers. Familiarity and comfort with advanced statistics is a requirement, as is a firm understanding of the current public research landscape. Just as importantly, we’re looking for an editor who displays good editorial judgment, as well as a talent for helping writers sharpen their ideas and hone their authorial voice. The associate editor will also manage FanGraphs’ social media accounts, and will have the opportunity to contribute written work of their own.
Key Responsibilities
Edit stories from start to finish for quality, factual accuracy, context, style and grammar
Ensure writers adhere to the site’s publication schedule
Craft social media posts highlighting FanGraphs stories, site news and initiatives, and merchandise, with an eye toward increasing site engagement and traffic
Monitor baseball news to assist in story/idea generation
Pitch and write stories when applicable
Help organize long-term projects and coverage
Skills
Minimum Skills:
Strong news judgment, a keen eye for detail, and high standards for accuracy and clarity
Deep familiarity with modern baseball statistics and the public research landscape
Ability to detect and enhance individual authorial voices
Basic competency and familiarity with G-suite, email, and Slack
Ability to work some weekends and evenings as required by the baseball calendar and news cycle
College degree or equivalent experience
Desired Skills:
Familiarity with the SABR style guide
Experience working within a WordPress CMS
Familiarity with SEO and other concepts that make our articles easier to find and read
This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits. As FanGraphs is a web-based company, relocation is not required; this job can be completed from most geographic locations, as long as you have reliable internet access and are willing to work during the hours that readers in the United States are awake. Some weekend and evening work will be required.
