Always the bridesmaid, never the bride. This famous saying directly relates to how the rival San Francisco Giants must be feeling after the last few offseasons.
San Francisco has been trying to land a star player for some time now, but it seems they finish just short of completing the job time and time again. Once again, they failed to sign a big star this offseason and had to watch their division-rival Dodgers land the top two on the market.
First, it was Shohei Ohtani signing with L.A., but it always felt like he would become a member of the Dodgers. But the Giants believed that they had a real shot to sign free agent Yoshinobu Yamamoto, only to watch him sign on the dotted line with L.A., as well.
After the Dodgers introductory press conference for Yamamoto on Wednesday, his agent, Joel Wolfe, poured gas onto the fire of the Giants coming close. He said that the Giants could have been Yamamoto’s choice if the Dodgers hadn’t been around.
“He thought that San Francisco really reminded him of Osaka and thought it was a beautiful city,” Wolfe said. “If the Dodgers had not been pursuing him, there was a good chance San Francisco could have been his destination.”
San Francisco will land a star player at some point, especially if they continue to throw money around. But for now, Los Angeles will gladly watch the Giants miss out on these top free agents, especially with them coming to join their team this offseason.
The Dodgers front office has set themselves up extremely well over the next few years, and they are going to continue adding to the team, as well. With these two stars in the mix, L.A. is all-in on trying to win championships.
The fanbase has been waiting for this type of spending for years, and finally, it has come to fruition. With all of their resources at their disposal, the Dodgers are now the ‘villains’ of baseball.
