The man who stole Nick Kyrgios’ car isn’t anyone new to Australian law enforcement as he has a serious criminal history, including hitting and killing a student in 2005.
On May 1st, the Kyrgios family had a horror morning after a thief showed up on the doorstep of Kyrgios parents’ home in Canberra and pointed a gun at the Australian tennis star’s mother while demanding the keys to the 28-year-old’s green Tesla. After being given the keys, the carjacker left the place but he was arrested by police around half an hour later after Kyrgios was able to locate the car and slow it down using his Tesla application.
After initially pleading not guilty, the individual – whose name hasn’t been publicly revealed due to legal reasons – changed his plea this week and pleaded guilty to a single charge of committing robbery while armed with an offensive weapon.

Now, The Canberra Times reports it is the same person who hit and killed 21-year-old Canberra student Clea Rose. 19 years ago, the man – who is now 33 years old but was 14 at the time of the incident – was speeding in a stolen car to escape police when he hit Rose, who spent 20 days in the hospital before sadly losing her battle and passing away.
Later, the man received a three-year jail sentence. After getting out of jail, the man returned to criminal activities and found himself again jailed in 2012 after being found guilty of burglary and theft.
Considering the allegations and charges the same individual is facing again, he will very likely soon be back in prison as he is scheduled to appear in court again next month.
In late 2023, Kyrgios acknowledged the incident from last May was a very “traumatic” experience for the entire family and admitted he was unsure if he would be ever able to “heal” from something like that.
