There are loads of different snow types out there: ice, slush, suncups, wind buff, powder, groomed, chalk, “cascade concrete,” “Sierra Cement,” and the list goes on.
Amongst this list is a category of snow that few would consider skiable: avalanche debris — a loose, usually firm pile of blocky snow chunks that’ll buck you like a bronco.
But skier Jordane Legal — known for completing one of the largest ski jumps of last season — doesn’t play by the same rules as the rest of us.
In a video shared yesterday, October 20th, Legal blasted through an avalanche debris field like it was nothing. He threw a backflip in there, too, for style points.

While writing about another video of Legal’s earlier this fall, I noted that several viewers — myself included — spotted a similarity between his skiing and the legendary Candide Thovex.
This video, with its unique take on what is and isn’t skiable (if LEgal’s involved, it’s probably the former), once again echoes Thovex, who, over the years, has developed a reputation for skiing on countless non-snow surfaces, like the Great Wall of China, or an immense dune.
In short, I can’t wait for whatever antics Legal gets up to in Europe once the snow starts falling. You might disagree that his skiing mirrors Thovex’s, but this much is undeniable: the guy’s immensely talented, with a creative eye to match.
