The quarter-final lineup in Shanghai is set, and there were several upsets, notably with Grigor Dimitrov cracking the Alcaraz code as he took out the Spaniard in three sets.
Jannik Sinner and Casper Ruud were the other high-profile victims, the former coming unstuck with Ben Shelton while the Norwegian fell in three sets to Fabian Marozsan.

Marozsan Takes Out Ruud
Casper Ruud became the latest high-profile causality in Shanghai as he fell 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-4 to Fabian Maroszan in the last sixteen.
The Hungarian has had a breakthrough year, especially at the Masters 1000 level, and he played solidly throughout.
Ruud also played well for the most part, saving 12 of 14 break points, but Maroszan found a bit extra at the tail end of the third to edge through.
I’m very happy to beat Casper. He’s a top-seeded player here in Shanghai. I just started very good. I played one of my best matches in Shanghai. I was just happy to win the first set. Of course, the second set was not easy, he started to play much better, and the third was also a tough one. I’m really happy to beat him here. Marozsan on his win over Ruud.
Shelton Sinks Sinner
Ben Shelton ended Jannik Sinner’s impressive Asian swing run with a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) victory against the 6th-seeded Italian.
Sinner started the match the better of the two with some crisp hitting, as Shelton’s serve didn’t make an impact.
However, as the match wore on, Sinner’s intensity dropped, and Shelton took charge; although he almost squandered a 4-0 lead in the third set tiebreak, he steadied the ship to take it 7-5.
Despite the loss, Sinner booked his spot in Turin at the ATP finals for the first time, and there are now just four spots up for grabs at the season-ending championships.
This is a pretty crazy atmosphere. To think that a year and a half ago I was in college and a year ago playing Challengers, now I am on centre court in Shanghai with the crowd singing happy birthday. It is one of those pinch me moments.
I had a lot of belief in my ability to serve and hang tough and to make it deep in sets. I trusted my fitness levels, being able to go the distance. That gave me a lot of confidence. My serve wasn’t working that well in the first set, I felt that he was really on top of me. I really started to find my groove and had one of my best serving days in the second and third sets.Shelton on his win over Sinner.
Dimitrov Dashes Alcaraz Hopes
There’s still some life in “Baby Fed” as Grigor Dimitrov recorded his best win of 2023, coming from a set down to beat Carlos Alcaraz 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
The Bulgarian lost the first set despite being a break up, and it looked as though he had once again flattered to deceive, but he stuck around to capture the second set and then gained an early break in the third, which he maintained for the duration of the set with some solid serving.
Dan Evans had shown two days prior the type of game plan to employ to cause Alcaraz problems. Dimitrov followed a similar blueprint, except he could hit that heavier serve + one combo to earn more free points, which made all the difference.
I stayed in the match, that was the first thing, especially after the first set, I was serving very well throughout the first set and he made a few errors. I pushed him to make a lot of errors at certain moments. At 4-5 he played an amazing game and another at 6-5. I was creating a lot of opportunities. After the second break in the second set I think I understood his service games and was able to put more balls in and read his serve a bit better. I think in the third set it was a bit of cat-and-mouse. I think we both played a solid set. He made a few errors and I was very solid and served well when I had to. Dimitrov on his win over Alcaraz.
