We now have more information on the Dodgers’ meeting with free agent two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani. It has been reported that the team met with Ohtani last Friday, December 1 at Dodger Stadium.
The team store and stadium tours were canceled so there would be no accidental sightings, keeping the privacy of the meeting in place. Insider Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register was the one to break the news.
This comes after the comments made by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts on Tuesday when he confirmed that the two sides have met. Roberts’ comments were met with a whirlwind of emotion from fans and media members alike, sparking much debate on the Dodgers’ fate with Ohtani.
Ohtani’s camp had previously said that any leaks about meetings would be held against the team in question, making it curious that Roberts let the information be known. He wouldn’t do anything to hurt the Dodgers’ chances with Ohtani, so there has to be some reason he admitted to the meeting.
Both president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and general manager Brandon Gomes said that they were shocked by the comments from Roberts. Since Roberts’ comments, the fanbase has been in a frenzy online wondering where they stand in the pursuit of Ohtani.
It remains unknown at this time if the comments will have any effect on the free agency of Ohtani, but if he chooses to sign elsewhere, fans won’t let Roberts live this down. Hopefully, this was all just a minor misunderstanding and Ohtani still ends up in Dodger Blue this winter.
