ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The University of Chicago track & field teams picked up one All-American honor and qualified for three additional finals at day one of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday.
UChicago’s lone event final of the day was the last race of the evening – the women’s 10,000 meters. Four Maroons were in action in what turned out to be the fastest 10,000-meter race in Division III history. Anna Kenig-Ziesler clinched a spot on the All-American podium as she placed fifth overall in a time of 34:53.21. Frances Schaeffler took ninth place, followed by Katarina Birimac in 12th and Sophie Tedesco in 22nd.
The women’s 1,500-meter prelims saw all three UChicago runners qualify for Saturday’s final. Maddie Kelly crossed the line first in 4:28.40. Evelyn Battleson-Gunkel grabbed the third seed in 4:29.53 and Catherine Wimmer secured the eighth seed at 4:30.24.
Loren Brown advanced to Saturday’s finals in the women’s 400-meter hurdles. The sophomore took sixth in the prelims and set a new school record in the process, finishing in 1:00.56.
The women’s 4×100-meter relay also got into the finals by qualifying seventh overall after the prelims. The quartet of Camila Garanton, Gabriela Meschino, Isabel Layne and Maddie Lyons posted a time of 47.00.
