According to The Telegraph, LIV Golf had to pay a considerable sum of 1.5 million Pounds Sterling (or 1,728,934 Euros) to allow Bernd Wiesberger to re-enter the DP World Tour in 2024. The Austrian’s return to the European Tour, made official on November 23 for the 2023-24 season, was not without cost.
LIV Golf, a competing circuit on which Wiesberger has played since 2022, had to pay a significant fine so that the player could regain his place from next January.
Bernd Wiesberger, situation
This bill of 1.5 million pounds Sterling is linked to a clause in the contract that the former Ryder Cup player signed with LIV Golf.
Indeed, the “slingers” had been assured that they would be able to play both on the LIV Golf and on the DP World Tour, financially supported by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia. A preconceived notion was proven to be completely wrong, as an English court in April upheld the European Tour’s decision to exclude all rebels.
However, Bernd Wiesberger, despite paying his fine, preserved his membership, unlike other former DP World Tour executives such as the English Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter or the Spaniard Sergio Garcia. Wentworth, the DP World Tour headquarters in the greater western suburbs of London, has given Wiesberger the green light to focus entirely on the European Tour next season.
“I am happy to announce that I will be focusing entirely on the DP World Tour next year,” said the golfer, who is a multiple winner on the tour. “I have never resigned my membership and so I am grateful to have the opportunity to be able to play a full schedule again”.
With a category 11 (Top 40 Career Money List), Wiesberger is ready to officially return to the fairways for the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, the first Rolex Series of the season scheduled for January 18-21 in the United Arab Emirates. This is the fine payed.
