The third season of the Arab Golf Super League opens with great enthusiasm in Mexico. From tomorrow until February 4, Playa del Carmen will be the stage for the LIV Golf Mayakoba, an event that marks the entry, into the independent golf league, of illustrious names such as the Spaniard Jon Rahm, currently in third place in the world ranking and considered the highest paid sportsman in the world.
Not only Rahm, but also Englishman Tyrrell Hatton and Polish Adrian Meronk will make their debut in this competition.
Liv Golf, schedule
LIV Golf has made a series of European-caliber purchases, financed by the PIF, Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund.
Among these market hits, the names of Rahm, who accepted an extraordinary offer of over 550 million dollars, and Hatton stand out. Both of these players have already teamed up in the Ryder Cup in Rome and will now be part of the “Legio XIII” team, under the guidance of Rahm himself.
The event in Mexico will follow the tradition of the Arab Super League, with a double competition. There will be an individual competition, where the winner will be rewarded with an incredible prize pool of $4,000,000, and a team competition, where the winning team will win a prize of $3,000,000.
This season of the Arab Golf Super League is expected to be one of the most exciting and competitive ever, with the arrival of new talents and the rise of great champions. In 2019, plans emerged for a new golf league to compete with the PGA Tour, known as the Premier Golf League.
PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan responded by pointing out that golfers who chose to play in a new league would be barred from PGA Tour events. Later in 2020, the PGA European Tour and PGA Tour entered into a ” strategic alliance” to collaborate on business opportunities, calendar and prize money for members of both tours.
The Premier Golf League has held talks with Saudi investors over a financial partnership. However, Golf Saudi, a division of the Public Investment Fund, instead funded a new entity in 2020 with the goal of establishing a global professional league, often called the “Super Golf League”.
This entity was officially launched in October 2021 under the name LIV Golf Investments, and former professional golfer Greg Norman was appointed CEO.
