HMSA and Vintage Indy announced today that historic Indy cars will appear April 19-21, 2024 at the 49th annual Grand Prix of Long Beach. 40 years on from the CART PPG Indy Car World Series debut on the streets of Long Beach, cars from the 1960s on will delight fans with sight and sound speeding throughout the Southern Calif. street circuit.
“When I first wanted to do this, I was thinking about the first time I saw the turbine car at Riverside,” Recalled HMSA President Cris Vandagriff. and, “It just blew my mind. This is is our opportunity to bring cars that haven’t been seen on the west coast since then, and I’m looking forward to it.”
“Myself, our staff and the entire Vintage Indy membership are beyond thrilled to have been considered and invited by HMSA’s Cris Vandergriff and the Grand Prix of Long Beach to this crown jewel on the NTT Data IndyCar schedule. It is such a historic and prestigious Southern California Motorsport happening and is our fourth different venue over the years where we’ve been a companion to IndyCar,” said Michael Lashmett, Pres. Additionally, for the sixth consecutive year Vintage Indy recently companioned IndyCar at World Wide Technology Raceway just 5 minutes from downtown St. Louis. Twenty two historic cars ranging from a 1930s Miller to a 2001 G-Force graced the paddock and greeted fans.
Two new cars, the stunning STP Swede Savage tribute Eagle Offy and the Robby McGhee Energizer Battery G-Force were debuted for their first on-track outing. All of the groups cars saw track time over three days.
Friday’s heat of 105 degrees proved no deterrent and the group got in their early Saturday morning run just prior to torrential rain and stormy conditions. Two time Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser Jr. was once again behind the wheel of the groups 1978 Chevrolet Corvette Indy 500 pace car.
Vintage Indy’s next and final appearance for 2023 will be September 28-Oct 1 at Pontiac, Michigan’s M1 Concourse for the American Speed Festival. More details, including tickets and schedule information can be found HERE.
