Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal, Frederic Vasseur, offers insights into the Maranello team’s recruitment challenges in pursuit of victory.
At the beginning of 2023 Formula 1 championship, the French manager stepped into the role, taking over from Mattia Binotto. His tenure started with its share of difficulties, primarily stemming from the inconsistent performance of the SF-23, a single-seater that has proven to be quite a handful for both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz.
Complicating matters further, several key personnel members departed the team, including David Sanchez, who served as Head of Vehicle Concept, now with McLaren, and Sporting Director Laurent Mekies, who made the move to AlphaTauri. In response to these departures, the Maranello team launched an ambitious recruitment campaign, but it has been a time-consuming process.
“With recruitment, we’re already in discussions” – Fred Vasseur pointed out ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix – “It’s a very long process and the consequence of this is that the people will join sometimes in a couple of months. But we have people starting in the company on 1st of January 2024 and some in July 2024, some will start at the beginning of 2025. It’s a very long-term process and somehow it’s a bit frustrating also because you have the feeling that you are working for two or three years from today.” – the Ferrari boss added.
In the realm of Formula 1, the ‘gardening leave’ stipulations in contracts mean that it might take a few years before some of the critical new hires can officially join the team. Nevertheless, Frederic Vasseur emphasizes that he has been tirelessly working to ensure that the race team remains cohesive and motivated during this transition period.”
“But on the other end, if you don’t start to do it you will never get it [who you want] and you need to have a push on it. I think we made a good step forward. We fought to finalise the race team, including the deal with the current team of the guys, but it’s important to keep it confidential and to work in a good mood. I don’t want to jeopardise something, but soon we will have some announcements.” – Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Frederic Vasseur concluded.
