The Los Angeles Dodgers signed another pitching project on Saturday afternoon, agreeing to a one-year contract with Dinelson Lamet with an invite to Major League Spring Training.
The signing of Lamet by the Dodgers was confirmed by J.P. Hoornstra of Dodgers Nation.
The 31-year-old has spent his entire career in the NL West, aside from a couple of months with the Boston Red Sox to end the 2023 season. He has bounced around with the San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies.
Lamet was once a promising young starter with what appeared to be a breakout year with the Padres in 2020. He was 3-1 with an ERA of 2.09 over 12 starts and 69 innings pitched.
However, since Opening Day 2021, he has dropped off significantly. He transitioned to the bullpen and has only amassed 107 total innings at the Major League level. Lamet has also watched his ERA skyrocket to 6.88.
His 2023 season was a complete disaster, posting an ERA of 11.57 in 16 games with the Rockies and 13.50 in one game with the Red Sox. The Red Sox designated Lamet for assignment on August 9, and he opted for free agency on August 14.
The upside to Lamet is that he has a fastball that nears 100 miles per hour. If the Dodgers can revive this lost bullpen arm and turn him back into a promising threat, the signing might work out well for both parties.
