Tony Gonsolin’s start on Friday may end up being his last for a little white. Or maybe a long while.
On Friday night against the Miami Marlins, Gonsolin had one job: Go deep into the game and save the bullpen as the Dodgers will be playing a doubleheader tomorrow due to Hurricane Hilary — and the first game of the doubleheader is going to be a bullpen game.
Unfortunately, he couldn’t do his job.
Gonsolin lasted just 3-and-a-third innings, and allowed 10 earned runs in the process, including five home runs. It was not only the worst start of his career, but it could also be the last one he makes for the rest of this season — or at least the foreseeable future.
Dodger fans were not happy about the start, which pushed Gonsolin’s ERA to 4.98 on the year. They shared their frustration on social media.
Some fans thought about potential internal options the Dodgers could look at to replace the struggling righty.
And one fan wondered what kind of package he could have brought back at the trade deadline… if only the Dodgers made the move.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said last week that Gonsolin would be on a short leash in the rotation, and it feels like that leash has officially come off.
With Ryan Pepiot returning and Emmet Sheehan or Gavin Stone ready to come back up and pitch, Gonsolin’s time in the rotation may be done for now.
