Big Sky Resort, Montana, announced today, August 14th, that it’s gearing up for its longest season ever.
In a press release shared with Powder, the resort said it plans to open on November 22nd, 2023, earlier than Big Sky has opened during previous seasons. Factor in the resort’s scheduled closing date of April 28th, 2024, and we’re looking at what could be the longest Big Sky season on record — a total of 159 ski days.
Big Sky intends to open before Thanksgiving during all future seasons from here on out.
Last season, Big Sky opened one day later, on November 23rd. Although the 2022 November 23rd opening was still considered early by Big Sky’s standards, facilitated by a large amount of pre-season snowfall.
In the press release, Big Sky’s general manager, Troy Nedved, explained the benefits of firing the bull wheels up earlier than usual:
“Our shift to an earlier opening gives our guests and team members more time to celebrate opening day and Thanksgiving with family and friends, and more skiing to look forward to in November.”
Sounds like a sweet deal to me.
And, of course, it makes me a bit jealous. The last time I skied before Thanksgiving was in 2019, when Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia, was my home hill. Here in Missoula, Montana, the smaller resorts tend to get things running after Thanksgiving during December.

To wrap up, here’s a friendly reminder: today marks 100 days until ski season at Big Sky (and likely other resorts) starts! It’s getting to be time for those snow dances, folks.
