Aryna Sabalenka has broken the silence on the death of Konstantin Koltsov, revealing that they went their separate ways before the tragic loss but also added that her heart was still left “broken over an unthinkable tragedy.”
This week in Miami, the Belarusian sports world but also the tennis world were left shocked when it was reported that Koltsov – a former Belarusian hockey tennis star – suddenly passed away at the age of 42 in Miami.
Initial reports suggested that Koltsov – who started dating Sabalenka in 2021 – was in Miami with the two-time Grand Slam champion when the tragedy happened. On Tuesday, the Miami-Dade PD provided much more clarity on the situation when they revealed that they were treating the case as a suicide, without any foul play involved.
Meanwhile, Sabalenka stayed in Miami and decided to compete in the tournament amid the tragic situation.
“Konstantin’s death is an unthinkable tragedy, and while we were no longer together, my heart is broken. Please respect my privacy and his family’s privacy during this difficult time,” Sabalenka said in a statement posted on her Instagram Story.
Sabalenka says Koltsov wasn’t her boyfriend anymore
After false reports claimed that Koltsov passed away due to a detached blood clot, the real reason was revealed by the Miami-Dade PD, who said in a statement that the 42-year-old Belarusian jumped off a balcony into death.
“According to investigators on Monday, March 18, 2024, at approximately 12:39 a.m., Bal Harbour Police and Fire Rescue were dispatched to the St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort, 9703 Collins Avenue, in reference to a male that jumped from a balcony,” the Miami-Dade Police Department said in a statement yesterday.
“The Miami-Dade Police Department, Homicide Bureau, responded and has taken over the investigation of the apparent suicide of Mr. Konstantin Koltsov … No foul play is suspected.”
Meanwhile, Sabalenka had a first-round bye in Miami and her second-round meeting against Paula Badosa will take place on Friday.
