2023 sees the return of the Asian Swing on the ATP Tour for the first time since 2019, and the Shanghai Rolex Masters is the signature event.
The field has expanded to a 96-player draw with Carlos Alcaraz as the top seed after Novak Djokovic decided to skip the Asian Swing after his exploits at the US Open.
Daniil Medvedev heads in as the defending champion, hoping to add to the four hard-court titles he’s already accumulated this season.

Thoughts on the Draw
First Quarter
Seeded Players: (1) Carlos Alcaraz, (7) Taylor Fritz, (10) Frances Tiafoe, (13) Karen Khachanov, (18) Grigor Dimitrov, (22) Nicolas Jarry, (27) Jiri Lehecka, (30) Dan Evans.
Carlos Alcaraz makes his debut in Shanghai as the top seed and will kick off his campaign against Nuno Borges or Gregoire Barrerre after receiving a bye in the first round.
The Spaniard could run into Karen Khachanov, Grigor Dimitrov, and Dan Evans early doors, but given his form in Beijing, you’d make him a solid favourite to progress to the latter stages.
On the opposite end of this quarter, Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe are the leading contenders to face Alcaraz in the quarterfinals, but Nicolas Jarry and Jiri Lehecka may also have a say.
Second Quarter
Seeded Players: (4) Stefanos Tsitsipas, (5) Andrey Rublev, (12) Tommy Paul, (15) Cameron Norrie, (21) Jan-Lennard Struff, (24) Alejandro Davidovick Fokina, (31) Adrian Mannarino, (32) Ugo Humbert.
Fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas is in this quarter, and he will be desperate to put some match wins together after having a relatively poor year so far. However, his loss in last week’s second round in Beijing doesn’t look promising.
The Greek could face Laslo Djere in his first match and Ugo Humber in round three, who are more than capable of causing the upset.
The other side of this quarter has Andrey Rublev as the fifth seed, but his section is tricky with Tommy Paul and Davidovich Fokina.
Third Quarter
Seeded Players: (3) Holger Rune, (8) Casper Ruud, (11) Alex de Minaur, (16) Hubert Hurkacz, (17) Lorenzo Musetti, (23) Tallon Griekspoor, (28) Tomas Martin Etcheverry, (29) Christopher Eubanks.
Casper Ruud won back-to-back matches on hard courts for the first time this season in Beijing, and he hopes to go one better in Shanghai.
The Norwegian starts against the tricky Nishioka or Altmaier before a potential third round against Chris Eubanks.
Speedy Gonzalez Alex de Minaur is in the section, too, along with Stan Wawrinka as the perennial dark horse who hasn’t delivered his best consistently lately despite his run in Umag, suggesting there could be more to come.
Fellow Scandinavian Holger Rune is the 3rd seed in the other section, but he’s had a rough ride of late, and his record on outdoor hard courts isn’t that impressive, so you’d probably back Hurkacz to make the quarters.
Fourth Quarter
Seeded Players: (2) Daniil Medvedev, (6) Jannik Sinner, (9) Alexander Zverev, (15) Felix Auger-Aliassime, (19) Ben Shelton , (20 Francisco Cerundolo, (25) Sebastian Baez, (26) Sebastian Korda
Daniil Medvedev is the 2nd seed and has a reasonably tricky path should he successfully defend his title. The Russian likely faces Cristian Garin in the opening match, which should be easy enough.
A third round against Seb Korda, who is in the final in Astana, is his first hurdle. Felix Auger Aliassime is seeded to meet him in the fourth round, but that doesn’t seem too likely, given Felix’s woeful form.
In the other section, Jannik Sinner is the top seed. This section also includes Ben Shelton, Andy Murray and Sebastian Baez. Still, it will most likely come down to the Italian and the resurgent Alexander Zverev for a place in the quarterfinals.
What do you think of the draw? Are you excited about the return of Shanghai after its four-year Hiatus?
