Djokovic Fights Off Fokina
Novak Djokovic came through another tough battle, this time against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, to reach the last sixteen.
Following on from an exciting match against Fucsvovics on Wednesday, the 3rd seed had to fend off some big hitting from the Spaniard to progress 7-6(4), 7-6(5), 6-2.
The opening two sets were imposing, with Fokina’s aggressive gameplan matching up well with Djokovic’s defensive abilities to produce some highly entertaining rallies.
Based on how the draw panned out, I thought this was the most challenging third-round encounter for any of the top-seeded players as Davidovich Fokina, while unpredictable, can be a real handful, so kudos to Djokovic for coming through in straight sets.
Highlights
Sonego Shocks Rublev
Lorenzo Sonego came back from two sets to love down for the first time in his career en route to defeating World No. 7 Andrey Rublev 5-7, 0-6, 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3.
Sonego was outplayed for the first two sets as Rublev dictated play with his heavy groundstrokes, but something clicked in the Italian’s game and from the third set onwards, he started to push Rublev back behind the baseline where he was less effective.
Suddenly, the Sonego forehand did all the damage, and Rublev only knows how to fight fire with fire, but the Italian wasn’t going anywhere as he booked his spot in the last sixteen.
Highlights
Alcaraz Too Strong For Shapovalov
Carlos Alcaraz came through a fun but relatively one-sided encounter with Denis Shapovalov recording a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 victory.
After being dominated in the first set, Shapovalov forged a 4-1 lead in the second with some great shotmaking, but his game is volatile, and Alcaraz was able to turn the set around once the Canadian’s purple patch had faded.

Other Matches Of Note
Tstisipas Smashes Schwartzman: A routine win here for the Greek, who was in control and hit an around-the-net post-winner.
Musetti Knocks Off Norrie: An impressive 6-1 6-2 6-4 victory for the Italian, who is back in form after a bit of a slump, and Norrie had no answers.
Ofner Offloads Fognini: A disappointing five-set loss for Fognini, who’d have been in with a shot of making his first French Open quarter-final since 2011.
Etecheverry Ends Coric: The Argentine continued his fine form to make the fourth round at a Grand Slam for the first time.
Jarry Jolts Giron: Jarry won the title in Geneva and is on an eight-match winning streak after defeating Giron in four sets.
Nishioka Sends Off Seyboth Wild: The Brazilian missed three set points in the second set tie break which proved costly as he fell in five sets 3-6, 7-6 (10/8), 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 to the 27th seed Nishioka.
Ruud Zaps Zhang: A slow start for the Norwegian, but his forehand found its range as the match wore on as he ran away a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 against Zhizhen Zhang.
Cerundolo Flattens Fritz: A topsy-turvy match with ten breaks of serves, but Cerundolo is the more natural clay courter and is better at constructing points as he won 3-6 6-3 6-4 7-5.
