CHICAGO – Five members of the University of Chicago softball team earned spots on the 2023 Academic All-District Team, as selected by the College Sports Communicators (CSC).
Delaney Choi made 19 pitching appearances with five starts. In the circle, the junior submitted a 7-0 record with a 2.32 ERA. She struck out 52 batters in 57.1 innings. Opposing hitters were limited to a .232 batting average.
Clare Fortier started 36 out of 37 games played for the Maroons. As the team’s starting shortstop, the sophomore helped turn four double plays while batting .210 with 10 RBI. Fortier was a perfect 10-for-10 on stolen base attempts.
Paige Heffke started 19 of her 26 pitching appearances. The staff ace accrued a 14-6 record with 16 complete games and three saves. The sophomore posted a 1.47 ERA with 138 strikeouts in 138.1 innings.
Laila Sims started all 37 games in center field. The sophomore blasted a team-high six home runs while adding a .339 batting average, 22 RBI, six doubles, two triples and 17 walks. Sims also stole a team-leading 25 bases on 29 attempts – the third-most steals in program history.
Ava Sinai started 32 of 36 games played, primarily in left field. The junior compiled a .274 batting average with eight RBI, three doubles, one triple and four steals.
Nominees for CSC Academic All-America must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at their current institution.
