On a day that saw Dodgers RHP Dustin May head to the injured list, there wasn’t much coverage on any other Dodger related news — and rightfully so. However, aside from the fact that the team won 7-3 on Wednesday and clinched their sixth straight series win, the Dodgers also had another player suffer an injury-related issue.
In the seventh inning of Wednesday’s game, Max Muncy was tracking a fly ball in foul ground. The ball ended up going right up to the netting, and Muncy banged his knee on the wall trying to make the play. He didn’t make the play, and his knee got the worst of it.
Muncy ended up limping back into play, and finishing the game out with seemingly no issues.
However, after the game, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts spoke to the media, and said Muncy was dealing with some swelling in his knee. He did say he was in good spirits, but said that the team would be checking on him again on Thursday hoping to see no further issues.
Muncy had been sick for the last week-plus, and seemed to finally be shaking that illness off. Muncy admitted the sickness took away his energy and power at the plate, so the last thing he needs is another issue affecting his game.
When he’s been healthy, Muncy has been one of, if not, the best power hitter in the game. He currently trails Mets slugger Pete Alonso for the MLB home run lead by one, but Alonso has 24 more plate appearances than Muncy heading into Thursday.
Muncy is averaging an impressive 9.36 at-bats per home run, which is best in the league as of Thursday. So, according to his average, if he had the same amount of at-bats as Alonso, he’d be the MLB’s home run leader.
The Dodgers slugger had just broken out of a 2-for-28 slump on Monday against the Twins with a multi-home-run, three-hit game. He went 5-for-11 in the series overall, so hopefully the knee issue gets better on Thursday, and Muncy isn’t affected by it moving forward.
Like Roberts said earlier this season, the Dodgers run on Max Muncy. The last thing they need is for him to not be 100 percent yet again.
