The Los Angeles Dodgers are getting a much-needed day off on Thursday. The team just finished a grueling stretch of baseball, playing 13 games in 13 days.
The Dodgers went an impressive 8-5 during that stretch, including most recently taking two out of three games from the National League-best Braves in Atlanta.
The Dodgers may be off, but that doesn’t mean they were quiet. On Thursday, the team officially made two roster moves, per the team’s transaction log.
First, the team optioned RHP Tayler Scott back to Triple-A. And second, RHP Wander Suero cleared waivers, and was outrighted to Triple-A.
Let’s start with Scott, who never ended up getting into a game for the Dodgers. The journeyman pitcher was brought up as potential depth for the bullpen, but was never needed. Scott will now head right back to Triple-A, but does remain on the 40-man roster. If the Dodgers feel like they need some more depth again, he could get an opportunity.
As for Suero, the Dodgers designated him for assignment after he struggled mightily at the MLB level. Suero appeared in four games for the Dodgers, pitching 6.2 innings and allowing six earned runs. That gave him an ERA of 8.10 before being DFA’d.
However, Suero cleared waivers, meaning no one wanted to pick him up, and the Dodgers were able to send him right back down to Triple-A. He’ll continue working in Oklahoma City, hoping to earn himself a call-up again at some point later in the year.
Thursday’s day off couldn’t have come at a better time, as the Dodgers’ bullpen was greatly taxed. The Dodgers only had three starting pitchers go more than five innings — Bobby Miller on Wednesday, Julio Urias on May 13 and Dustin May on May 12.
Fortunately, everyone gets a rest, before the team gets set for a three-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays in Florida.
The Dodgers now have an opening on their active roster with Scott back in Triple-A, so we’ll see who they decide to bring up.
