Dodgers LHP Julio Urias had an uncharacteristic start in his last outing against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Urias got roughed up in the third inning, allowing not one, not two, not three, but four home runs, including three in a row to Cardinals hitters. It was the first time Urias had ever allowed four home runs in an inning, and he didn’t throw another pitch after that meltdown.
While Urias didn’t make any excuses in the moment, it didn’t take long for some of the truth to come out about that start.
The Dodgers placed Urias on the injured list just days later, with what they called a left hamstring strain. On Tuesday, Urias explained the injury and how it came about (per Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register).
“It was just one pitch (early in the inning) where it felt like it popped or it felt like it just tightened up,” Urias said through an interpreter. “It was something I felt but I’m not going to make an excuse for that. I’m not going to try to justify that inning. It’s just something I felt, something that I had to pitch through and I pitched through in the past.”
Obviously Urias wasn’t really able to pitch through it, as he had arguably the worst inning of his MLB career. But to be fair, his fastball velocity was down that inning, and he explained that it wasn’t easy to push off.
While he did suffer some bruising in the next few days, he did have a positive update on Tuesday.
“I feel good,” Urias said. “I think we caught it early. I think now that we’ve had a couple days in the training room the bruising is coming down and the swelling is coming down. I feel it’s getting better every day.”
Urias said he’s continuing to do some exercises in the gym, and hopes to throw off the mound when the team gets to Tampa Bay this weekend.
It doesn’t sound like he’s planning on missing any more than the 15 days from the injured list stint, but it’ll probably depend on how his throwing goes this weekend.
