Dodgers rookie right-handed pitcher Bobby Miller absolutely shoved in his MLB debut, pitching five innings and allowing just one run on the road against a strong Braves lineup in LA’s 8-1 victory.
Miller looked the part of an MLB starting pitcher, throwing six pitches at or over 100 mph while mixing in a ton of secondary pitches to keep the Braves’ hitters off balance.
Overall, Miller was flat-out dominant, and settled in very nicely after allowing a run in the first inning.
After the game, Miller received a ton of praise from his manager for his impressive performance.
“He was really impressive,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Miller. “I thought he showed a lot of poise tonight. Did a great job of managing his emotions, adrenaline. He showed just enough attitude and a little edginess, and just competed.”
Roberts was also impressed with his ability to stay even-keeled, and not try to throw too hard when the moments got big.
“For me, the biggest takeaway is, when it got a little hot, when he needed to make a pitch, he was able to not overthrow,” Roberts said. “I was also really impressed with how he held his velocity for 90 pitches. He was touching 100 (mph) at 90 pitches. Really impressive.”
Miller was able to work around base runners in the second, third and fourth innings, including stranding a runner at third base with one out in the fourth.
In the fifth, he retired Sam Hilliard, Ronald Acuna Jr. and Matt Olson in order, finishing his night at a strong 95 pitches. Roberts said that Olson was going to be his last batter, so it was great to see him great through that at-bat and ultimately get the win.
After the game, Roberts also confirmed that Miller would make at least more start for the Dodgers this turn.
While it’s great news that Miller is going to get another start, I’m sure Dodger fans want to see him get many, many more this season.
We’ll see how the rest of the year plays out, but for now, Miller is scheduled to pitch on Monday, May 29 against the Washington Nationals. That will be his Dodger Stadium debut.
