All-Star brothers Willson and William Contreras achieved a unique MLB feat together, despite playing more than 200 miles apart.
On Saturday, both Contreras brothers hit home runs on the same day.
Willson, the St. Louis Cardinals’ 31-year-old backstop, homered off Pittsburgh Pirates starter Luis Ortiz in the top of the second inning at PNC Park, tattooing a slider 404 feet over the right-centerfield wall. Meanwhile, 25-year-old William took Cincinnati Reds’ Graham Ashcraft deep at Great American Ballpark, but his long ball traveled an estimated 409 feet, five feet further than his older brother’s.
The catching siblings are no strangers to making history. Last season, they became the first set of brothers to start at catcher in the same game since Yadier and Jose Molina in 2014. Later that year, both earned All-Star selections becoming the first pair of brothers to play in the Midsummer Classic in almost 20 years (2003).
While the brothers equaled each other’s home runs Saturday, they’re also neck-and-neck statistically. William is batting .241 with seven homers, 19 RBI and a .759 OPS. Meanwhile, Willson is hitting .215, with six jacks, 26 RBI and a .666OPS.
Saturday marked the third time the Contreras brothers have homered on the same day. It might not be the last, with plenty of games left in their respective careers.
